Story Title: Herb Highlight – Tasting Asia
Growing herbs in pots is a fantastic idea – it’s more practical than growing in your garden and will allow you to bring the freshest of herbs into the kitchen.
- Swan Valley Nursery has a collection of Asian herbs that can be found in your local garden centre or Bunnings warehouse.
- Lemon grass grows like wildfire and is rich in citrus flavours. If you’re organising a pot of herbs, put it at the back, as it grows tall.
- The front of the pot is all about spill, and there is something magical about the sour properties of Vietnamese mint, otherwise known as the laksa herb. The plant leaves are pungent and taste amazing in soup.
- Thai basil is quite seasonal, growing poorly in cooler climates. If you live in a colder area, you can try growing holy basil or perennial basil.
- Perennial coriander is a great plant to add to your pot. Coriander doesn’t like hot and dry climates, preferring the cold and cool. It grows slowly and doesn’t bolt to seed.
- Pick up 2 of each plant and rotate them in and out of the kitchen each week – this will ensure a long and hearty supply of flavours.
