Warren Grange Heirloom Vegetables

Title: Warren Grange Heirloom Vegetables
Broadcast: Episode 3, 15th July
Presenters: Scott Taylor

Scott travels to Manjimup to visit Warren Grange who are returning old flavours to modern cuisine with their Heirloom vegetables.

  • Warren Grange Horticulture is owned and operated by Rick Scoones and is situated right on the heart of a Karri Forrest in Manjimup.
  • Manjimup has become a real food bowl, the soils and climate make the location so suited to horticulture and such a wide range of varieties.
  • Rick likes the idea of having more choice rather than just your usual Pumpkins you will find in a retail store.
  • The different shapes and varieties gives a choice of flavours, both from savory to sweet and dry to moist, offering opportunities for variations in cuisine.
  • The produce is matured fully on the plant, hence why currently there are not many green leaves left on the plant. This means they have a full complement of sugars and other nutrients of which many only get delivered in the last week or so of ripening.
  • The high quality of soils in the region means fertilizing and spraying of chemicals is almost non-existent.
  • The humble Pumpkin is one of the best sources of beta-carotene, which when consumed converts to Vitamin A which can reduce the risk of certain cancers and asthma, along with Potassium and Vitamin C it is also great for the Heart.
  • Rick has 43 weird and wonderful varieties of Pumpkin, such as the White Cloud, Turks Turban and Finger Squash but he also explores other great varieties such as Aubergines and refines his selections as time goes on in response to how the public takes them.
  • You can find Rick at the Farmers Markets every week in Perth at the Manning Markets on a Saturday and Kalamunda Markets on a Sunday.
